2012
Avera defeated Stan Butterfield, receiving over 50% of the vote in the May 15th primary, winning the election outright.[2][4]

2010
Avera ran unsuccessfully against Monte Campbell, Chester Scott and Melanie Mansell for Position 2 of the Polk County Circuit Court, which comprises Oregon's 12th Judicial District. The seat was vacated earlier this year by the retirement of Charles E. Luukinen.[5] Avera came in second in the race with 26.30% to Campbell's 43.08%.[6]
