Four of the seven seats on the Salt Lake City School District school board were up for general election on November 8, 2016. There was a primary election for Precincts 1 and 5 held on June 28, 2016. In Precinct 1, incumbent Tiffany Sandberg defeated Teresa Organista in the general election after defeating John Santini in the primary election. Precinct 2 incumbent Michael Clara lost his seat to Michael Nemelka in the general election. Incumbent Heather Bennett won re-election to the Precinct 5 seat after defeating Jason Stevenson in the general election and Cathy Graham and Daniel Mcguire in the primary election. Precinct 7 incumbent Kristi Swett won re-election to her seat by defeating challenger Ryan Pleune.[1]

The Salt Lake City school board consists of seven members elected by geographical precinct to four-year terms. There was a primary election for the Precincts 1 and 5 seat held on June 28, 2016, and a general election was held on November 8, 2016, for four seats.[2]
The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was March 17, 2016.[1]

The Salt Lake City school board election shared the ballot with federal elections for President of the United States, United States Senate, and United States Representative. Canyons School District is located in Salt Lake County, Utah. The county seat is Salt Lake City. Salt Lake County was home to 1,107,314 residents in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[6] The district was the ninth-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 24,597 students.[7]
Demographics
Salt Lake County outperformed in comparison to Utah as a whole in terms of higher education achievement from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 31.3 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 30.6 percent of all state residents. The median household income in the county was $61,446, compared to $59,846 for the entire state. The poverty rate in the county was 11.9 percent, while it was 11.3 percent for the entire state.[6]
