Meas ran in the 2012 election for Massachusetts State Senate District First Essex District. He was defeated by Shaun Toohey in the Republican primary on September 6.[1][2][3]

Meas is an escapee from the Cambodian civil war, and in 1983 made it to a Thai refugee camp before eventually emigrating to the United States. Sam and his wife Leah have two daughters.[4]
