My name is Sam Wakefield, and I'm running as the democratic candidate for the 65th District of the Georgia House of Representatives. As a husband, father, educator, and community leader I'm deeply passionate about building a legacy for our families and young people. I believe we have a responsibility to elect state legislators who understand both the local context and who also understand how to get things done in our divided political climate. I’m running because I believe in a politics of change rather than division, a politics of hope rather than fear. I believe that there are common sense areas where we can make progress, and I intend to advocate for the things that strengthen our communities for families.
  • One of the biggest challenges facing our state is the ongoing assault on how we educate our young people. As an educator, I understand the difficult position of teachers and school leaders. If our state is ever going to live up to the potential of its young people, we must provide them with better opportunities to learn, invest more in the people who support their education, and ensure that we have expanded access and opportunities for pre-k and post secondary students
  • We’re one of only 10 states who have yet to expand Medicaid and as a result 1.4 million Georgians currently lack healthcare. According to the Georgia Budget & Policy Institute, closing this gap would address racial disparities in health care access and outcomes, which disproportionately affect black women and children. Through my wife’s work as a holistic nurse practitioner, I have learned firsthand the need to invest in mental health, reproductive healthcare, and additional support for seniors.
  • Voting is a fundamental right of each Georgian, a right that multiple generations have fought to protect dating back to reconstruction. Despite historic turnouts in recent years, we’re seeing an increase in efforts to make it more difficult to vote. Our job as state legislators should be to safeguard that right and encourage more ways for citizens to engage in our political process and have their voices heard.
Education, Voting Rights, Affordable Housing,
Personal integrity, Ability to compromise, Ability to get things done
I want the families of the 65th District and the state of Georgia to say that they are better off as a result of the work we've done.
As our population grows, our ability to meet our expanding and diverse population with the critical infrastructure investments of education, healthcare, and economic opportunities they need.
