Samantha "Sam" Smith is a Republican political consultant. Since 2011, Smith has worked for Google in Washington, D.C., as a communications director. She has worked on John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign as a communications operative. She has also worked as a deputy press secretary, communications director and press secretary for Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.). She was also the communications director for Chris Christie's 2016 presidential campaign PAC, Leadership Matters for America and for Christie's official presidential campaign.

Career

While earning her bachelor's degrees in communications and political science at the University of North Carolina in 2005, Sam Smith was a press intern for former Sen. Bill Frist (R-Tenn.).[1][2] In 2007, she interned at Vertical Media as a media affairs intern.[3] She graduated and joined Sen. John McCain's (R-Ariz.) presidential campaign as a surrogate communications operative in 2008.[4][1]

From 2009 until 2011, Smith worked in the office of Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.). She began as the deputy press secretary, then, during his 2010 campaign, she served as communications director.[3][4] After Burr's victory, Smith served as his press secretary.[5] However, shortly thereafter, Smith left Burr's office to join Google's Global Communications and Public Affairs office in Washington, D.C.. Smith is a senior associate at Google.[5][2][6]

In February 2015, while still at Google, Sam Smith joined Chris Christie's PAC, Leadership Matters for America, as the communications director.[6][4][2]

On June 30, 2015, Christie announced his 2016 presidential campaign.[7][8] It was announced on July 3, 2015, that Smith would act as Christie's campaign communications director.[9]

Christie suspended his presidential run on February 10, 2016.[10]
