Samuel James Ervin, III (1926-1999) was a federal judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit. He served on the court for nineteen years, from 1980 until his death in September 1999, including a stint at the court's chief judge from 1989-1996.[1]

Ervin was nominated to the Fourth Circuit on April 2, 1980 by President Jimmy Carter to a newly-created seat.[1]
