The son of a U.S. Army Military Policeman (MP) and Union Steward, Sam grew up working class in LA and Monterey counties. A first-generation graduate from Vassar College, he also earned his Certificate in College Counseling from UCLA. He served as Homeowner's Representative on the West Adams Neighborhood Council and worked in Culver City at Chase Bank as Vice President of Investments for six years. Currently Samuel is a Financial Advisor. He has been a homeowner in District 54 since 2009 and owns an Educational Services company with his husband Paul. His focus is on our public & Charter schools, smart urban planning and commercial development, low-income and affordable housing, supporting and working with our law enforcement partners, advocating for mental health services, and advocating for LGBTQ+ representation in Sacramento. Samuel believes health care is a human right and would support expanding and building upon Covered CA.
  • I am a California native with working class roots who knows the challenges working and middle class families face in LA.
  • I am against defunding the police and I support expanding Covered CA, not a single-payer health care system.
  • We need to support LAUSD and find a way to lower class size and increase the number of counselors.
I believe representation in the political arena is a key factor in promoting progressive change. I am the only Latino running in this race, in a Latino-majority district. Also, as a gay man, I will proudly represent the LGBTQ+ community in Sacramento.
The skill of listening to different viewpoints and the ability to compromise.
I am the opposite of stubborn, I can listen to different viewpoints and change my mind if the argument is compelling.
To represent the interests of one's constituents and to protect the most vulnerable among us.
That I improved the quality of life for my constituents.
The first historical event I remember was when I was 8 years old living in The Netherlands where my father was stationed at the time and President Reagan was shot. My father was immediately called to report for duty and his battalion was put on high alert, which frightened and confused me.
My very first job was in high school. I was a busboy at a restaurant in Monterey, CA for a summer.
Roosevelt's Centurions - FDR and the Commanders He Let to Victory in World War II. This book opened my eyes as to the relationship between FDR and Churchill and FDR's struggle to support Britain when the U.S. was not supportive of joining the war effort.
Being a gay Mexican-American in a society that is majority white and until relatively recently, hostile to the gay & lesbian community.
I would like to be a part of the Banking & Finance Committee, as well as the Military & Veterans Committee.
