On the recommendation of U.S. Senator John W. Warner, Wilson was nominated by President George H.W. Bush on March 6, 1990, to a seat vacated by Judge Glen M. Williams as Williams went on senior status. Wilson was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 11, 1990, and received commission on May 14, 1990. Wilson served as chief judge of the court, from 1997 to 2004.[1] He retired, instead of taking senior status, on August 1, 2014, shortly after turning 65. He planned to move to Taiwan and teach American criminal justice at the National Taiwan University after his retirement.[2]
