Four seats on the San Benito Consolidated Independent School District board were up for general election on May 10, 2014. Place 4 incumbent June Aguilera was defeated by challenger and former city commissioner Arnold Padilla. In the Place 5 race, incumbent Hector Leal won by a large margin over challengers Joyce Aguirre, Roberto Benavides and Rene Salinas. Incumbent Oscar Medrano was re-elected in Place 6, defeating challenger Orlando Lopez. The Place 7 race, arguably the most contentious, saw challenger and college readiness specialist Angel Mendez defeat incumbent Julian Huerta as well as challengers Esteban Rodriguez and Gilbert Weaver.[1]

San Benito Consolidated Independent School District is located in Cameron County, Texas. The county seat of Cameron County is Brownsville. The county's population was 406,220 according to the 2010 U.S. Census.[2]

Demographics

Cameron County underperforms in comparison to the rest of Texas in terms of higher education attainment, median income and poverty rate. The 2010 U.S. Census found that 14.9 percent of Cameron County residents over 25 years old held undergraduate degrees compared to a 26.3 percent rate for the state of Texas. Cameron County had a median income of $32,558 in 2010 compared to $51,563 for Texas. The poverty rate for Cameron County was 34.9 percent in 2010 compared to a 17.4 percent rate for the rest of the state.[2]

Voter and candidate information

The San Benito Board of Trustees consists of seven members elected to three-year terms. There was no primary election and a general election took place on May 10, 2014 for four seats. Three seats were on the ballot in May 2015.[3]

A member of the board must be 18 years old, a U.S. citizen and a resident of the district. An individual seeking office must be a resident of the state for 12 months and a resident of the district for six months, prior to the last date on which the candidate could file to be listed on the ballot.[4]

Superintendent suspension

In May 2013, Board President Yliana González called for Superintendent Antonio G. Limón to be placed on suspension. The board had been evaluating Limón on a monthly basis since December 2012.[6] As of December 2013, over $6,000 had been spent in an investigation of the superintendent regarding mismanagement. Ismael S. Cantú served as interim superintendent.[7]
