Sandra Fluke is a self-described "social justice lawyer" and the California state director of Voices for Progress, a public interest advocacy group.[1][2]

She was a 2014 Democratic candidate for District 26 of the California State Senate.[3]

Fluke earned her B.S. in Policy Analysis and Management as well as Feminist, Gender and Sexuality Studies from Cornell University in 2003. She also received her J.D. with a Certificate in Refugee and Humanitarian Emergencies from Georgetown University Law Center.[4] While at Georgetown, Fluke was the President of Law Students for Reproductive Justice, an editor for the Journal of Gender and the Law, and Vice President of the Women's Legal Alliance.[5]

The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was March 7, 2014. Ben Allen (D) and Sandra Fluke (D) defeated Barbi S. Appelquist (D), Betsy Butler (D), Amy Howorth (D), Vito Imbasciani (D), Patric M. Verrone (D) and Seth Stodder (I) in the blanket primary. Allen defeated Fluke in the general election.[6][7][8]

Noteworthy events

Fluke drew public attention for her advocacy on contraception coverage under Obamacare while a law student at Georgetown University. Congressional Democrats invited her to speak at public hearings on contraception mandates.[1] This led conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh to call her a "slut" on his radio program. He later apologize, saying he "did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke."[10]
