I’ve been married for 43 years. We have one daughter who earned a PhD this year. I served 37 years in the US Army; my retired rank is Command Sergeant Major. I am a lawyer. I started my firm in 1992. I have been a volunteer at the Thurston County (TC) Legal Clinic since 1992. I also serve on 4 non-profit boards: TC Visitor Board; South Sound Veteran Services; North Thurston Education; and, The American Legion Post 3. I’ve lived in Thurston County since 1979. I love it here!
  • We need new leadership in Olympia. I represent NEW.
  • We need a strong economy in Thurston County. I can help.
  • Our K-12 students deserve a relevant education. A 21st century education!
Homelessness and how our local governments are essentially ignoring the tent cities and garbage is something I’m passionate about. I’m a take action kind of guy. I’m not a go to 20 meetings and do nothing but make policy kind of guy. We need a strong economy based on innovation and relevancy. Traffic is another area that I believe needs action. Traffic issues can only be solved by people actually using public transportation.
President’s Lincoln, Kennedy, and Reagan to begin with. For different reasons, but the Gettysburg Address continues to move me; President Kennedy was a true war hero and patriot. All three are great patriots. President Reagan showed true leadership with, “tear down the wall!”
You have to recognize what is and is not working. You have to be inspired to effect change. You have to get out and see the results of current law and public policy. And, you have to ask yourself if what you see is what you expected. If not, then fix it. And, don’t stop until its fixed!
You are responsible for the general welfare of everyone within your district. You need to set them up for success.
I want to leave this place better than I found it.
I started picking strawberries in the Willamette Valley when I was 12&13; I started mowing lawns, landscaping, and washing cars when I was 14. I worked at Safeway when I was 16. I left Safeway and joined the US Army at 20. I returned to Safeway and joined the US Army Reserve at 23. I left Safeway and became a legal intern at 32. I retired from the Army at 60. I’m still practicing law.
Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. I have read TAGR several times and I learn a little more about myself every time. He helps us all to realize we can be anything we want to be.
Losing gracefully. I don’t like to lose.
Relevancy in a world economy. So, we need to aggressively pursue the best businesses, business leaders, and we need to grow them from within our own state. We need healthier citizens who need not as much healthcare.
Of course. For example, as a lawyer I have intentionally developed great relationships with peers, their staff, judicial officers, their staff, the superior court clerk and that staff. As I get closer to working as a legislator, it is amazing how superficial most of the relationships are up there. And, the staffs I talk to feel disrespected. Not all, but way more than half.
Population should not be the only criteria. I’d like to see smaller town like Tumwater have as much a day in state law decisions as Tacoma or Seattle.
1. College and Workforce Development, 2. Housing, Human Services & Veterans, 3. Rural Development, Agriculture, & Natural Resources
Because I have been a family law lawyer since 1992, the stories I grow from have been about families breaking up. Because I was a First Sergeant and Command Sergeant Major from 1991-2014, the realities of war, PTSD, suicide, etc. have helped me grow and have changed me into who I am today. I have represented these people and advocated for these Veterans so they can and do have better lives.
