Santa Fe Public Schools Elections

General election date
February 7, 2017
Enrollment (14-15)
14,752 students

Two of the five seats on the Santa Fe Public Schools Board of Education were up for by-district general election on February 7, 2017. District 3 incumbent Susan Duncan did not file to run in the race, guaranteeing a new member was elected to the board. Kate Noble, the only candidate who ran, won the open seat. In her bid for re-election to District 5, incumbent Lorraine Price also ran unopposed and won re-election to the board.[1][2]

It was not unprecedented for the district to have a high percentage of unopposed seats. In the 2015 school board election, two of the three seats were unopposed. Click here for more election trends in the district and the state.

Voter and candidate information

The Santa Fe Board of Education consists of five members elected to four-year terms. Elections are held by district on a staggered basis every February of odd-numbered years. Three seats—from Districts 1, 2, and 4—were up for election on February 3, 2015, and two seats—from Districts 3 and 5—were up for election on February 7, 2017. There was no primary election.[3]

To be eligible to run for office, school board candidates had to live in the boundaries of the school district and be qualified electors of the state. To get on the ballot, they had to file on December 20, 2016. The deadline to withdraw as a candidate was January 3, 2017.[4][5]

To vote in this election, citizens of the school district had to register by January 10, 2017.[5] Photo identification was not required to vote in New Mexico.[6]

Though the 2015 Santa Fe Board of Education election had a high percentage of unopposed seats, it did not have a 100 percent unopposed rate as seen in the 2017 election. In 2017, one incumbent ran for re-election, and one newcomer ran for an open seat. Both won election to the board without opposition.

Two incumbents were unopposed in their bids for re-election in 2015, but the open seat on the ballot that year attracted more competition. Two candidates ran to fill that seat.
