Wottawa previously ran the Seat 1 position on the Sachem Central Board of Education before the board transitioned to an at-large board. She lost the general election on May 20, 2014.

Three of the nine seats on the Sachem Central School District school board were up for general election on May 17, 2016. Incumbent Tony Falco, along with newcomers Mike Matlat and Sara Wottawa, defeated challengers Bevin Llanes, Alexander Wilson, and Carol Locklin in the race for three seats. Dennis O’Hara originally filed to run but withdrew from the race.[2]

Sara Wottawa lost to incumbent Teri Ahearn for Seat 1 in the general election on May 20, 2014.
Board members were elected at large by the district as a whole, but each seat on the board is considered distinct and elected separately.
