Biography

Sarah Beeson was born in Canton, Georgia. She received a bachelor's degree in journalism and a minor in political science from Georgia State University in 2010, a master's degree in business administration from the University of Georgia, and a master's degree in environmental management from the University of Maryland. Her professional experience includes overseeing operations and health and safety for her family's environmental consulting firm, working for the Human Rights Campaign, and working in digital marketing.[1]

Sarah Beeson is a Roswell native and mother who operates a 50+ employee family business that has been based in Roswell for over two decades. As an active community member, she has championed transit expansion as a board member for Advance Atlanta, worked for LGBTQ protections and equality with the Human Rights Campaign, and advocated on behalf of small business owners as a Leadership Council Member for the National Small Business Association. She lives in Roswell with her husband, two sons, and their dog.
  • I will fight to expand Medicaid and access to affordable healthcare to ensure that every Georgian has healthcare coverage.
  • I feel strongly about protecting funding for public education and working to improve the quality of our public schools.
  • I am determined to improve the public safety of our children and all Georgians by advocating for common sense gun legislation to keep our schools, neighborhoods, and places of worship safe.
I am passionate about the issues that most directly affect Georgians' overall quality of life: healthcare, education, and public safety concerns.

Every Georgian deserves access to high-quality, affordable healthcare, which is why I support expanding Medicaid so we can better support Georgians. It simply does not make sense for us to reject federal funding for healthcare and agree on a system that costs more to cover less people. We must work on improving the quality of maternal healthcare, especially for women of color and in rural areas. We should also begin exploring more state-funded options based on the advice of medical professionals to overcome the opioid epidemic that is currently plaguing Georgia's 56th Senate District and the rest of the state.

Although Georgia's pre-K program is lottery-funded, it shouldn't be a lottery to determine who can enroll. Every child in Georgia should be guaranteed the option for placement in the state's preschool and early education program. I believe in local control of school systems and fully funding our public education programs - including paying our teachers fairly.

I support addressing the issue of gun violence on our school campuses, background checks for gun owners, and keeping guns out of the hands of those convicted of domestic abuse. Additionally, I support the passage of hate crimes legislation at the state level, which Georgia currently lacks.
I am running for Georgia's 56th Senate District because I believe elected officials should be accessible and transparent in the vein of public servitude. When there is an unwillingness to interact directly with all constituents, regardless of what their political stance is, we lose the true value of a democratic republic. Ultimately, elected leaders should work for their constituents and be willing to listen to what they have to say-- whether it is a criticism, concern, or show of support. Elected officials should be both proactive and reactive, addressing the needs of their constituents and having a pulse on the district they represent.
I also believe that an elected official should balance budgetary concerns and fiscal responsibility with providing adequate resources in a way that improves Georgians' lives across the state.
Maya Angelou once said "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." I want to leave a legacy of love for my family, service to my community, and a positive impact on the world that will live on after I am gone. Whether this is raising my children to be caring and kind stewards of their family and community or working to fulfill the needs of my community, I will continue to work toward leaving this legacy in whichever ways I can.
I was in 5th grade at Mountain Park Elementary when the tragic Columbine High School shooting took place. I distinctly remember this event being the catalyst that made me realize schools could be unsafe. I wondered if something similar could happen at my school. How would I get out? How could I contact my parents? That year marked the first time I participated in an active shooter drill -- the same drills I would later participate in through middle school, high school, and the workplace well into adulthood. Now as a parent myself, little has changed in terms of institution or legislation. Instead, I feel nervous and helpless when dropping off my child at preschool knowing so little has been done at the state-level to protect his life and the lives of others from gun violence in our schools.
One of my favorite books since childhood has been The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The themes of the book resonate with any generation, such as understanding that love is all-powerful, the importance of seeking the truth, and avoiding the tendency of becoming jaded. The language is simple and easy to understand, making it enjoyable at any age.
Over the next decade, the biggest needs facing the state are providing all Georgians with access to affordable healthcare, equipping all of our children with a quality education in a safe environment, and laying a foundation to ensure our state is economically and environmentally viable and thriving. I believe that it's important to always look ahead to prepare for Georgia's future rather than trying to address issues with only the short-term consequences in mind. The challenges at the state-level lie in planning, funding, focusing, and most of all, working together when it comes to addressing these issues head-on.
I would like to serve on the following committees: Natural Resources & Environment, Education & Youth, and MARTOC (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Overview Committee). I possess both a formal and working knowledge in the environmental space. Through my graduate studies to receive my Master's of Science in Environmental Management, I received a strong education in environmental policy, regulations, and long-term planning to mitigate the impacts of climate change. As a mother of two young children who is passionate about funding and improving our K-12 and pre-K programs, I would like to serve on the Education & Youth committee. Our teachers need to be supported and paid fairly, our schools need resources, and our students need a first-rate education -- a fight I would to take to the Georgia Capitol. In regards to MARTOC, I have served on the board of directors for Advance Atlanta, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding public transit options throughout Metro Atlanta. Through my service with this organization, I became very familiar with MARTA's operations, the benefits of public transit, and our untapped potential for economic prosperity through transit expansion.
Over the past year while I have been running for office, I have been approached by many constituents with personal stories of loss, health or financial struggles, and need. The common thread in many of these stories was that they felt unheard. Whether they were unable to access their elected leaders, felt ignored when advocating for a personal issue at the Georgia Capitol, or frustrated with the lack of public meetings for constituents to express their concerns, each of these residents felt left out of the democratic process. One of the major reasons I decided to run is because I firmly believe in public service through accountability, accessibility, and transparency -- and their stories only reaffirmed why that need exists.
