I'm a small business owner and seasoned advocate around public policy issues. I have a BA and MBA from U of M and have been active in alumni activities since 1990. I've served in a number of volunteer capacities in support of the university including President of the UM Club of Lansing and on the Board of the Alumni Association. I'm a U of M sports enthusiast and have been attending a variety of sporting events since 1986 and have held season football tickets nearly continuously since then.

I grew up in rural southern Michigan on a family farm and continue to hold my conservative values dear. I will bring a common-sense approach to the Board of Regents.

The UM Board of Regents currently lacks partisan balance with only one Republican serving. If elected, I will help restore a more robust discourse of ideas and viewpoints among those providing oversight to UM President Schlissel and university operations. I'll be a steward of taxpayer resources and help ensure your dollars are spent with the best interest of Michiganders in mind.
  • It's important that UM safely gets back to in-person learning and active athletics. Cancelling football was a mistake.
  • I'll ensure free speech in the classroom and elsewhere on campus.
  • I'll help rein-in tuition and make U of M affordable for our future leaders.
Detroit Free Press   Featured local question
I think it's a mistake that the board didn't engage more robustly in the president's decision to cancel the football season. This was a major decision with significant implications for revenue for both the athletic department and university as a whole. Athletics play a large role in the reputation, brand and awareness of the university and impact how it is perceived by future students, donors and alumni. The board had an opportunity to take a greater role in this decision and (at least publicly) chose not to. Fortunately the president was able to rectify this bad decision and we are now scheduled to have a truncated football season.
Detroit Free Press   Featured local question
The university should always seek to reduce costs at all levels so tuition costs can be reduced in-kind. Layers upon layers of university and academic bureaucracy should be streamlined for the benefit of students and Michigan taxpayers.
The COVID 19 pandemic is the most serious challenge facing U of M & the board can do more to help address it. The Board should also do more to ensure the resumption of college football safely. Athletics are an important part of the student experience and a major driver of national and international prestige and awareness of the University. Coach Harbaugh has shown he can keep the team COVID-free with vigilance & regular testing. At U of M, revenue from football helps support almost all other men's and women's athletics. When UM cancelled football they basically cancelled sports for both men and women. The resumption of athletics and in-person instruction are both key to the future financial stability of the university.
I'm a common-sense conservative with decades of experience participating in the process of governing from the outside as an advocate. I own a small business and know what it's like to make a payroll and provide strong customer service. These are important qualities and values that will make me a successful officeholder.
My first job was working as a summer assistant to the County Tax Assessor in Branch County, MI. I had the job for three summers and learned a significant amount about Michigan's methods of property taxation and assessment. These early lessons continue to influence my thinking now. It's important to understand how government works and how it affects your life. The work we did affected all taxpayers in the County since we were establishing the percentage by which property valuations would increase in the next year. It's these very mundane yet important aspects of government that often go overlooked by taxpayers but are extremely important to make sure you are treated fairly.
While previous experience in government or politics is not required, it is certainly helpful since this is a political body. My experience as an advocate brings me before government bodies on a regular basis and has exposed me to many kinds of political decision-making. This experience will help inform my approach to the U of M Board of Regents.
