A Sarasota County Commissioner Term Limits Question was going to be on the January 31, 2012 ballot in Sarasota County.

This measure was removed from the ballot by Sarasota County Circuit Court Senior Judge Jack Schoonover because the ballot language was misleading. The County took the measure off the ballot because there was not time enough to change the language and some commissioners had expressed their concerns over the concept of grandfathering current commissioners in their positions.[1]

This measure sought to extend the County Commissioner term limits from two terms to three and would allow current members of the commission to be grandfathered in, allowing them to serve longer than the existing term limit. Opposition to this measure was vocalized by members of the Commissioner's party, all Republicans, as well as residents who saw this as a way to ensure Commissioners are allowed to stay in power longer. Though there is a provision in the charter which limits terms to two four year terms, a circuit court deemed them unconstitutional in 2005 so the term limits have not been enforced. The issue had been pending with the Supreme Court.[2]
