Recall reports

Recall elections against four of the six members of the Sargent Public Schools Board of Education in Nebraska were held on December 12, 2023. Laura Kipp, Tammera Moody, Loyd Pointer, and Marty Riddle were on the ballot.[1] A majority of voters voted yes in favor of the recall, removing the board members from office.[2]

The effort started after the board voted to not retain Cory Grint as principal for the 2023-2024 school year. All four board members voted to end his contract in February 2023. The other two members of the board voted to retain Grint.[3][4]

Recall supporters

JacE Coslor filed the recall petitions. Coslor said the board's vote to not retain Grint was “unjust and illegal.” Coslor said the board members followed personal agendas and did not consult with the superintendent or the board's legal counsel.[5]

The petitions said the board members “did not follow protocol like they should have.”[3]

To get the recall on the ballot, supporters had 30 days to file 95 signatures per board member with the Custer County Clerk. The number of signatures was equal to "35 percent of the highest number of votes received by a single candidate in the last general election," according to the Custer County Chief.[6][5]

Recall supporters filed petitions with the Custer County Clerk's Office on August 25, 2023. The county had 15 business days to verify the signatures.[7] The county verified enough signatures to put the recalls on the ballot. The school board had 21 days to schedule the recall election.[8] The school board voted on October 2, 2023, to schedule the recall election for December 12, 2023. The election was held by mail-in ballot.[1]

If one or two members had been recalled, the remaining board members would have appointed replacements. Because more than two members were recalled, special elections were held for the four seats on February 13, 2024.[9][10]
