Candidate Connection

Sasha Bentley participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on July 24, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Sasha Bentley's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Education: investing in and supporting community colleges, technical schools, and vocational training, fully funding education with a sustainable finance plan and creating innovative learning programs, increasing teacher pay and providing training and support, protecting the Student Loan Bill of Rights and making college affordable; Affordable housing: directing more resources to communities with housing needs, providing incentives to private companies and local governments to create affordable housing developments, developing innovative strategies to serve the homeless, removing barriers to homeownership; Health Care: bringing healthcare coverage to all Washington residents, providing comprehensive mental health coverage, supporting programs to reduce prescription and other healthcare costs.[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

One of my personal priorities is to encourage civic engagement. I’ve served as the chair of the Klickitat County Democrats last year, and I am on the leadership team of the Columbia Gorge Women’s Action Network, leading voter registration efforts and the local government committee. Last year, I also created and launched a card game that teaches teens and adults about democracy and voting and the political party platforms and I’m marketing it nationally. Democracy only works if the people are engaged and heard and I want to do everything I can to encourage people to get involved.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Sasha Bentley answered the following:

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Listening, bringing people together, focusing on action, collaboration[3]
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
Preparing our economy for climate change and changing industries.[3]
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Community development, tribal affairs, and housing are all issues I have experience in and connection to top regional experts and resources. This is the committee I should serve on due to the fact that district 14 covers much of Yakama Nation and they need a voice on that committee at the state level. I'm an expert in efficiency and want to improve the efficiency of government decision-making and policy implementation and I believe the rules committee would be the best place for me to ensure a productive legislative session.[3]
