Satine Kryze was the former Duchess of Mandalore and leader of the Council of Neutral Systems, an intergalactic group of 1,500 planetary systems which remained neutral during the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, also known as the Separatist Alliance. In her official capacities, she lobbied both in the Senate of the Republic and before the Separatist Council to maintain Mandalorian neutrality. She was also a noted pacifist and advocate of the New Mandalorian movement, a group of Mandalorians dedicated to moving beyond the violent ways of the Mandalorian past.
Career
Duchess Satine Kryze was born on Kalevala, a planet in the Mandalorian system a long time ago.[1] Mandalore is located in a galaxy far, far away. She became Duchess prior to the blockade of Naboo by the Trade Federation.
During Duchess Satine's reign, she faced repeated insurgent attacks from a group of Mandalorian exiles known as Death Watch. Death Watch wanted to restore the violent, warrior ways of the Mandalorian people, which brought them into direct conflict both with Satine's personal pacifism as well as her leadership of the Council of Neutral Systems, an intergalactic group of 1,500 systems that remained neutral during the Clone Wars. Satine's own sister, Bo-Katan, was a member of Death Watch.
Satine faced repeated assassination attempts for her pacifist, neutral position which were orchestrated by both the Separatist Alliance, under the leadership of Sith lord Count Dooku, as well as by Death Watch under the leadership of Governor Pre Viszla, who ruled the exiled group from the Mandalorian moon of Concordia. Her views on neutrality also brought her into conflict with both Chancellor Palpatine and Vice Chair of the Galactic Senate, Mas Amedda, as she refused to consent to Republic occupation during the Clone Wars.[2]
Because of the repeated assassination attempts, Satine was, for a time, under the protection of Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Kenobi and Satine formed a strong, personal connection. Kenobi confessed to Satine that he would have left the Jedi Order to be with her.[3] She was also friends with Republic Senator Padme Amidala, who aided Satine in stopping smugglers from delivering drinks designated for Mandalore's schools which we poisonous.[4]
Satine was placed under arrest by Pre Viszla when he was named leader of the Mandalorian people as an agent of former Sith apprentice Darth Maul's Shadow Collective, an alliance of underworld organizations which included the Pyke Syndicate, the Hutt Clan, and Black Sun.[5] Maul ruled over the Shadow Collective with his brother, and former apprentice to Count Dooku, Savage Oppress. Satine was later killed by Darth Maul in front of Obi-Wan Kenobi just before the Battle of Sundari.
