I look forward to being part of the Langley team that shapes where we go next. I'm a mom, and I owe it to my kids and our community to make sure that we all have a community that we can be proud of and where we can thrive. Whether you have kids or not, we owe hope and opportunity to the next generation.
  • I want Langley to be an accessible and pedestrian friendly place to be.
  • I believe in creating affordable housing to keep our community economically diverse and help our local businesses thrive. I deeply value the natural beauty of this place and want to work towards ways to preserve it while housing those who treasure it - both are possible.
  • Government is about coming together to do that which cannot do alone. I really appreciate the recent focus by Mayor Horstman on what the City of Langley does. There is a balance to strike between what government has the authority to do, and what people expects of it. I hope to be actively involved in making sure we are good at managing expectations as a council.
The ones that ensure that we operate with heart and not just a bottom line. The ones that ensure that we operate smoothly without being burdensome - government needs to WORK to improve our surroundings and how we interact, not hinder us because of lawyers and fear. I'm especially passionate about the fun policies - government has a tendency to be dry, but there are some laws out there made in the name of love and fun - we need more of that.
As an incorporated city in Island County, we have certain services and infrastructure to maintain that neither the state nor the the county can do. and that requires oversight.
I really look up to Rachel Maddow. I studied journalism, and I'm very impressed by how analytical she gets and how in-depth she's looked at issues. She helps me understand the world better, even when faced with opposition. Her clarity is something to aspire to.
Integrity, honesty, transparency, accountability and communication.
Using one's time to work in service of the residents of the city of Langley and its friends and neighbors.
I hope that when I'm done with this life, my kids and those who knew me will feel a positive impact from my work, and are inspired to be passionate about how much better we as humans can be if we put our minds to it.
September 11, 2001, I was a freshman in college. I drove all the way to school only to be turned around at the entrance because class had been canceled. Then came the war in Iraq, committed under false pretenses, partly out of seeking justice from 9/11 as well as saying Iraq had weapons of mass destruction that they did not, and then Occupy Wall Street, when I was 29, when we had squandered our economy in the name of war and mismanaged mortgages leaving people without homes, and then people losing their jobs.
I did most service industry jobs growing up in a tourist-driven economy on Cape Cod. My mom had a bed & breakfast starting when I was about eight, and as I grew up, I learned how to run all aspects of the business - making reservations, making breakfast, housekeeping, etc. In tandem, I took on babysitting jobs, worked at the local sandwich shop, the coffee shop, in the galleries. As I got older, alongside those jobs, I also took on some tutoring and taught French - this was all from when I was in high school through finishing college. After college, I started substitute teaching K-12, and then in 2007, started working for FEMA.
This is a tough question, but one that rises to the top of my list is a Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. It blends deep themes - faith, friendship and destiny. The Vietnam era serves as a backdrop for the story and drives the moral questions the characters are faced with. One of the reasons I like it so much is that even though you know tragedy is coming, it still pulls on all your heart strings when it happens. I appreciate how well written and touching it is.
Wonder Woman - she has a high priority of supporting women and children, and I think that's a very worthwhile cause.
The alchemy of turning my passions into meaningful change. It's not an easy task. I love writing and copy editing, and I find myself delightfully challenged by a sort of copy editing of human culture. We are living, breathing human beings and constantly redefining our ideals and values, hopefully always for the better - that's what growth is about.
I think it's important to be able to communicate what's within the purview of the city, and when anything is beyond that scope, identifying partners and agencies that can help.
Familiarity with navigating through the RCW and MRSC, brining people together, and being a good communicator.
It is important to have checks and balance. The mayor administrates Langley policy and oversees the staff, and the council ensures that there's accountability in that role.
During my last campaign while doorbelling, a woman told me that she had never voted before, but because I'd come to ask for her vote, she said that she would. That felt so good - I hope I can give people a reason and a desire to participate.
As a South Whidbey Fire/EMS Commissioner, it is very rewarding to see our strategy to have a more resilient, prepared community start to take shape. I've always been struck by what happens when an intention is set and achieved, and I feel really good about watching this one come to life because of the work the board I'm serving on has done.
