Bryant ran for North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture in 2012. He lost to Walter Smith in the Democratic primary on May 8.[1] Incumbent Steve Troxler and Bill McManus sought the Republican nomination. The general election took place on November 6, 2012.

Issue positions
In an essay to the Charlotte Observer, Bryant stated:
"I will offer our farmers and consumers new leadership and a strong voice to promote agriculture and food safety. I’m tired of accepting business as usual. We need new leadership who won’t be afraid to shake things up in Raleigh. We need a working Commissioner who will stand up and fight for our farmers, our consumers and agribusiness in North Carolina. Farmers across the state are tired of having the bureaucrats in Raleigh tell them how to farm. We need a Commissioner who will listen to our farmers and work on their behalf – not the pencil pushers in the corner offices at Agriculture on Edenton Street."[2]
