Scott Gottlieb

Scott Gottlieb served as commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration from May 2017 to April 2019. Gottlieb announced on March 5, 2019, that he would resign. His resignation took effect on April 5, 2019. He stated in an interview, "I’m leaving because I need to spend time with my family. I get home late Friday, work on weekends and come back to Washington on Sunday. I did the job 100 percent."[1][2]

Gottlieb was a member of Donald Trump's presidential transition team, a group of advisors tasked with recommending presidential appointments for the incoming administration.[3]

Nomination as FDA commissioner

President Donald Trump announced his intention to nominate Scott Gottlieb as commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration on March 10, 2017. Commissioner Gottlieb was confirmed to the role by a 57-42 Senate vote on May 9, 2017. Previously, Gottlieb was a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and a consultant for pharmaceutical companies. He also previously served as the FDA's deputy commissioner for medical and scientific affairs during the administration of George W. Bush.[4][5]

Gottlieb was a member of Donald Trump's presidential transition team in his first presidential term. The transition team was a group of around 100 aides, policy experts, government affairs officials, and former government officials who were tasked with vetting, interviewing, and recommending individuals for top cabinet and staff roles in Trump's administration. He was part of the Department of Health and Human Services landing team.
