My name is Scott Hokanson and I am a husband to Ann, father of five children and a business person and philanthropist here in Plymouth.

I have spent my career helping small business and seniors and have served on numerous charitable organization boards including the Boys and Girls Club, Plymouth Antiquarian Society and Pilgrim Hall Museum.

I currently serve at board chair for the Chamber of Commerce.

In 2013 I was downsized by corporate America, spent the next two years on food assistance, unemployment and MassHealth.

I believe progressive policies are a hand up, not a hand out. I will work tirelessly for everyone making sure all of my neighbors can afford to live, work and enjoy our beautiful town.
  • I am committed to showing youth new paths to success that may or may not include a college degree. I will work to make sure our schools have the resources to help our kids succeed in diverse career paths including trades, unions and other exciting careers.
  • I am working today, and will continue to work on affordable housing and resources like transportation infrastructure. Both seniors and young people are struggling to stay in our town. I am proud of the work we have done to get Accessory Dwelling Units passed and look forward to taking new steps to make sure everyone can stay in their Hometown!
  • I believe everyone should be treated with dignity and respect. I support women's rights, the LGBTQ community and will work hard to find new resources for mental health initiatives. I have experience in the struggles to access Mental Health resources from my family and my clients. I am passionate about ending any stigma related to mental health and will work hard to get more capacity for care on the South Shore.
Mental Health, affordable housing, and diverse education paths are my top three.

In addition I will work hard for resources for people who are trying to improve their lives. This includes childcare and transportation support for everyone.
I look up to community leaders who have taken their
What Unites Us, by Dan Rather

I loved how he felt patriotism is not flag waving but rather service to your neighbor.

I also loved how he emphasized how we are better as a united community and not divided. In addition he acknowledged the suffering many groups have endured and continue to endure today.

This is a positive book, with hope for the future but an acknowledgement of sins of the past.

If I am anything, I am empathetic and hopeful.
Honesty, empathy and a willingness to learn. As State Representative I will work hard to listen and learn to each side of every issue.

I believe an appreciation for the diverse backgrounds each citizen came from is essential to being truly informed to vote on policies.

I will also promise to learn, every day. We have a dynamic world that is changing rapidly and we need to position our Commonwealth to succeed!
The qualities I will bring to Beacon Hill are that I am hard working, empathetic and a team builder.

Anyone who takes on the responsibility of being a State Representative has to work hard in their district learning the issues of their constituents and again on the Hill fighting for policies they believe in. I have always been a hard worker and today I work hard for my colleagues at work, the community I volunteer in and on behalf of my family when they need help. I will never be out worked.

Being empathetic may be my most important characteristic as a policy maker. Every issue I encounter, I promise to do my beat to view the effects the decisions we make have on every group and all the outcomes and equitable to everyone.

Being a strong team builder will enable me to work with my local colleagues and the greater legislature on accomplishing great things for our commonwealth. I will cross aisles, I will be a leader of the freshman class and I will ensure that together we accomplish the goals we set for each other.
Working hard to obtain resources for my district and regions. Being a voice of my constituents and advocating for them in an informed, intelligent and relentless way.

I will need to understand the struggles my neighbors are experiencing and be smart enough to find, evaluate and execute solutions.

I am a problem solver and that starts with listening. I will listen and I will get things done!
I believe a legacy I can leave is on improving mental health resources. My experience in health insurance underwriting and personal experiences navigating the mental health landscape here in Massachusetts gives me a unique perspective from two different sides of the spectrum.

I know I can help guide discussions on mental health in a fact based and human based manner to set policy designed to improve access for everyone.

I will work hard on education and housing as well, but I am confident my experience will be an asset on the hill for improving mental health reaources.
The Challenger Disaster. We were in school , watching on a tube TV and as a New Englander we were fascinated that Christa McCauliffe was one of our own going into space.

The ship exploded, then we were asked to go back to schoolwork… I can only imagine how differently it would be handled today.

The most influential historical event in my lifetime has to be 9/11. I had a niece born that day, I lost a friend and teammate that day. The unity the country experienced after 9/11 was special.

I was lucky enough to attend the Superbowl that February. We were scared walking in, security was overwhelming, but the halftime show and the “We are all Patriots” speech was something I will never forget.
I scooped ice cream at a Friendlies. It was my first of many minimum wage food service jobs and I came home with a sticky arm from the ice cream bins.

I used to love the artistry of making a Sundae but hated hand packing pints.

I had retail jobs through college and my junior year, after a man opened Pizza Joes on my college campus and his manager quit, he was over his head not knowing what to do.

I approached him to run the shop. I told him I would do all scheduling, food ordering and would work 20 hours a week, but he had to feed me and my future wife for free. He agreed.

I was the known as Pizza Scott!
A Walk in the Woods. Bill Bryson

I grew up spending summers in the White Mountains near Hanover NH where Bill was inspired to walk the Appalachian Trail. I love camping, hiking, fishing and enjoying the outdoors. But what I really loved about the book was the interaction with his wife before and after the trip and his relationship with his old buddy.

Their relationship with his wife reminds me of what Ann and I have together. She rolls her eyes at him, but cares so much for him and his safety. His homecoming to her was touching as well. She was his home, not a house, but her.

I also remember when I read it, I laughed so hard I must have sold 10 copies for Bill as people kept asking me ehat I was reading.
Probably a cliche answer, but Atticus Finch is the first one to come to mind.

I hope to have his courage to stand for what is right. I hope to have the empathy he showed.

And there is one scene that I will never forget reading the first time.

The scene is where his children, who in typical children fashion, don't think their dad is anything but a lump on a log, witness Atticus become one with a rifle as he has to put down a rabid dog. They saw him as something more. As someone with a hidden talent, one he didn't brag about or think was a reason to be impressed. But when his community, who at the time was not supportive of him, and his family were at risk, he protected them.

To me, that strength, that courage and that humility was inspiring.
“You Are the Best Thing” by Ray Lamontagne. It reminds me of my bride! (And my kids caught us dancing in the kitchen to it last year.. and posted it on tiktok!)
Seeing family members struggle with mental health issues and not being able to help them as much as they needed.

As a husband and father I pride myself as being a source of peace and comfort for my family. Having no ability to help and relying on others, who sometimes we could not access, was the most difficult part of my life.

We struggled mightily financially for some time. That struggle was leas hard to me as that issue fell on my shoulders to solve. I knew I could solve it.

Sitting next to a struggling family member in the hallway of a Mental Health wing of an hospital emergency room waiting in vane for three nights not knowing whether they would be assigned to Mclean to Pembroke Hospital was overwhelming at a time when I could not be overwhelmed.

What really effected me there too was knowing so many in the same situation do not have a loving family member to sit next to, to advocate for on their behalf. If I am elected I will be an advocate.
Being a State Representative, I will be advocating for roughly 40,000 of my neighbors while the Governor is responsible for 6 million.

Understanding that, we may have differing views and will have to provide each other checks and balances. The ideal relationship is one based on respect and in accordance with the Constitution. I will mot apologize when my vote is influenced by what is best for an ocean front community on the South shore but I will also respect my fellow communities and their advocacy for themselves.

The Governor signs the bills into law, and that burden of responsibility is hopefully supported by the respect for the work the legislature put into what ends up on her desk.
Affordability.

Inflation, the cost of healthcare and rising housing costs are making living in Massachusetts extremely difficult for those seniors on fixed incomes and on young people and families.

We need to find ways to increase pay for lower income households while also providing resources for things like day care and transportation.

The creation of jobs, well paying jobs, will be a focus of my time in office.
Of course. As a freshman representative I will need to find a very talented staff member and will lean on the experience of those who came before me.

I believe experience in business, experience in raising five children, experience in community service and advocacy for the less fortunate are all thing I bring to the table and I am excited to bring my unique perspectives to the Hill. I look forward to gaining political experience to be a resource for the generation to come after me.
This will be essential. Listening to the diverse needs of every community is something I am excited to participate in as State Rep.

I have built my career on bringing diverse people together. I build teams which are founded on respect for each other and learning. These skills will be an asset as I navigate Beacon Hill and advocate for policies I am passionate about.
Jim Cantwell from Marshfield. He was a State Representative for years but prior to that he was a community cheerleader in Marshfield.

He advocated on numerous issues and he came to me for input on Flood Insurance and sea wall issues that faced many of his neighbors on the coast.

He is smart, kind, and confident and I can only hope to earn the respect Jim earned over his career.
Not at this time, although I have joked at age 52, I still have 30 years to run for President!
My first bill I would propose would be in support of prohibiting large corporations or real estate trusts to purchase single family homes.

I believe this is one of the reasons home prices have exceeded the affordability for so many of my neighbors.
I believe my talents and career experience would be very useful in the House Committee on Human Resources and Employee Engagement and the Joint Committee on Health Care Financing.

I have 30 years experience helping seniors and small businesses navigate health insurance and look forward to bringing a my expertise into those meetings.

It would be my honor to serve on the Joint Committee on Education and the Joint Community Development and Small Business.
We need more of it now. There no excuse for behind the scenes dealings and backroom deals. I will commit to being 100% transparent in what we vote on and how I came to vote I made.
At this time I have no reason to oppose the current process. I would like to learn more as to why others want changes, I would listen and re-evaluate.
