An effort in Newport Beach, California, to recall City Councilman Scott Peotter from his position was initiated in April 2017. The effort ended in December 2017 after the Orange County Registrar of Voters determined that petitions lacked sufficient signatures to require an election. Recall organizers said they would seek a recount of signature validation on December 12, 2017.[1]

Recall supporters

Paul Blank, the city harbor commission's chair, argued that Peotter has not represented the best interests of his council district during the April 11 meeting. Recall supporters cited his support for the Museum House condominium project, his opposition to new public buildings, and allegations of insults directed to other public officials.[2]

Recall opponents

After Blank delivered his notice of intent to recall, Peotter said that effort was related to politics rather than violations of law. He also said that he would defend his votes in a recall election or during a regularly scheduled election in 2018.[2]

Save Free Speech in Newport chair Bob Rush offered the following statement opposing the recall:

Councilman Scott Peotter is a leader in cleaning the mess up and protecting residents. His political opponents have targeted him for a recall because they want to return to the days of overspending on pet projects.[3][4]

This total equaled 15 percent of the city's registered voters at the time of the notice. The county verified 8,339 valid signatures and determined that 2,357 did not meet legal requirements.[1]
