April 1, 2025: Fifty-five years ago on this day in 1970, President Richard Nixon signed the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act to ban cigarette commercials from being aired on television and the radio. Cigarette companies advertised their products heavily post World War II, so in response the Federal Communications Commission required stations to have one anti-smoking public service announcement for every three cigarette commercials in 1967. Bills would start being made in 1969 to ban cigarette commercials all together. Tobacco companies initially resisted, but relented realizing they could advertise in other forms of media. The ban officially went into effect on January 2, 1971.[1]
