April 10, 2017: A total of 153 million individual income tax returns were filed in 2016, and refunds were sent to 111 million people. Overall, that means 73 percent of all returns generated a tax refund.

The IRS issued $318 billion in total refunds, and the average refund was $2,680.[1]

In 2017, the federal government estimates that it will receive a net of $1.8 trillion in personal income tax revenue.[2]

Additionally, the government will collect $1.1 trillion in revenue from Social Security and other payroll taxes. Income taxes and social insurance taxes combined account for 80 percent of all government revenue.
