April 13, 2018: The FBI conducted 2,767,699 background checks in March. That’s the fourth-highest total ever recorded. It’s also the highest total for any month other than December.[1]
A total of 1,594,988 firearms were sold during the month. That’s 11% higher than the previous March.
The surge follows the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, which led to extensive media coverage of gun control advocates. Some analysts believe that fears about possible government restrictions on gun ownership led to the surge in sales.
However, North Carolina-based Hyatt Guns believes that “fear buying is only part of the equation.” Justin Anderson, the firm’s marketing director, said that “a more important variable is the overall economic outlook right now. The economy is growing, people have jobs, and they have money in their pockets. With a more positive outlook of their future, people are spending more money on luxury goods like firearms."
