April 13, 2021: Forty-one percent (41%) of U.S. adults listen to music primarily on streaming services. A CBS survey found that’s more than the 31% who usually listen to music on the radio. It’s the first time a CBS survey found that streaming surpassed radio as the top format for listening to music.[1]

Fifteen percent (15%) listen primarily to downloaded audio files, and only 7% primarily use CDs, cassettes, or vinyl records.[1]

Not surprisingly, there is a big generation gap on this topic. Among adult respondents 18-34, 61% listen primarily to streaming services, and just 13% prefer radio. On the other hand, a majority of senior citizens—55%—still listen to music primarily on the radio. Among the 65 and older crowd, just 10% usually listen to streaming services.[1]
