April 18, 2018: Joseph Robertson receives a monthly pension check of $76,111 after retiring as head of the Oregon Health and Science University. As The New York Times noted, that monthly payment is “considerably more than the average Oregon family earns in a year.”[1]
Robertson receives the biggest pension in Oregon today. However, more than 2,000 state government retirees receive over $100,000 a year. Mike Bellotti coached the University of Oregon football team for 14 seasons and receives more than half a million dollars annually in retirement.
The New York Times says that these problems exist even though Oregon "enjoys a reputation for fiscal discipline.” It is one of many states caught in a fiscal crisis of its own making. The cost of pensions is now forcing state and local governments to cut back on other programs and spending.
An earlier Number of the Day reported that the states have $1.5 trillion in unfunded pension liabilities.
