April 20, 2018: It took $68 million to get Harry Potter and the Cursed Child ready to open on Broadway this weekend. That’s the most ever spent on a nonmusical Broadway production. A typical nonmusical performance costs $3-5 million.[1]

A crew of 220 people was required to install and build the set. The budget must also cover 40 actors, 26 people handling wardrobe and hair, a 16-person stage crew, and five stage managers.

The show is already sold out through next March.

The story takes place 19 years after the last book, a time when Harry and his friends have become parents. The stage version is a two-part experience with a total running time topping five hours. The two parts can be seen on the same day or on consecutive days.

Big numbers are nothing new to the Harry Potter story. More than 500 million books have been sold, and the films have generated nearly $8 billion in revenue.
