April 9, 2025: One hundred and sixty years ago today, on April 9, 1865, General Robert E. Lee of the Confederate Army surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. This surrender was monumental, as it quickly brought about the end of the American Civil War. Several other Confederate forces would surrender and Confederate President Jefferson Davis would be captured in the following weeks.[1]
