August 1, 2024: Six (6) states require a simple majority of votes for the legislature to override a gubernatorial veto. Those 6 states are Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and West Virginia. The margin of vote required to override a veto is different from state to state. Thirty-six (36) states require a two-thirds majority, seven states require three-fifths, and Alaska needs to have both its combined legislative chambers give a two-thirds majority.

After the November elections in 2023, 29 state legislatures had a veto-proof majority. Twenty (20) were controlled by Republicans and the other nine were controlled by Democrats.
