The Number of the Day columns published on Ballotpedia reflect the views of the author.
August 14, 2023: Fifty-one percent (51%) of voters favor a ban on automatic voter registration at DMVs. A Scott Rasmussen National Survey found that this includes majorities of both Republicans (54%) and Democrats (56%). Independent voters are evenly divided between those who favor and oppose a ban.
The survey also found that 77% believe proof of citizenship should be required when registering to vote and 74% say drop boxes should only be available in places and times where they can be supervised and have video surveillance. Each of these positions is taken by majorities of both parties.
Methodology
The survey of 1,000 registered voters was conducted online by Scott Rasmussen on August 2-3, 2023. Field work for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. Certain quotas were applied, and the -sample was lightly weighted by geography, gender, age, race, education, internet usage, and political party to reasonably reflect the nation’s population of registered voters. Other variables were reviewed to ensure that the final sample is representative of that population.
The margin of sampling error for the full sample is +/- 3.1 percentage points.
