August 14, 2025: Eighty years ago, on August 14, 1945, the unconditional surrender of Japan in World War II was announced to the world. This came after nearly four years of U.S. participation in the war, beginning with the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Japan’s surrender came about after the dropping of two atomic bombs, one on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, and the other on Nagasaki three days later. The death toll from the two bombs totalled over 100,000.[1]
