August 15, 2022: Fifty-nine percent (59%) of voters favor a law protecting the legal rights of same-sex married couples. A Scott Rasmussen national survey found that this includes 40% of Republicans and 81% of Democrats.

The survey also found that an even larger majority (75%) believe churches should have the right to refuse to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies, and 60% say that religious organizations should not be required to hire people who are in same-sex marriages if this violates their religious beliefs.

Methodology

The survey of 1,200 registered voters was conducted online by Scott Rasmussen on August 4-6, 2022. Fieldwork for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. Certain quotas were applied, and the sample was lightly weighted by geography, gender, age, race, education, internet usage, and political party to reasonably reflect the nation’s population of registered voters. Other variables were reviewed to ensure that the final sample is representative of that population.

The margin of sampling error for the full sample is +/- 2.8 percentage points.
