August 18, 2022: Sixty-seven percent (67%) of voters say that the United States should formally recognize Taiwan as an independent nation. A Scott Rasmussen national survey found that 9% think the U.S. should not, and 24% are not sure.

The survey also found that 56% believe the U.S. and its allies should impose sanctions and other penalties on China until the Chinese government respects Taiwan’s independence. Eighteen percent say the U.S. should not impose sanctions, and 26% are not sure.


Methodology

The survey of 1,200 registered voters was conducted online by Scott Rasmussen on August 4-6, 2022. Fieldwork for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. Certain quotas were applied, and the sample was lightly weighted by geography, gender, age, race, education, internet usage, and political party to reasonably reflect the nation’s population of registered voters. Other variables were reviewed to ensure that the final sample is representative of that population.

The margin of sampling error for the full sample is +/- 2.8 percentage points.

Survey Questions

Taiwan is a separate and self-governing democracy, but the Chinese government has long sought to make it a part of China. The United States government has never formally recognized Taiwan as an independent nation or China’s claim to Taiwan. Should the United States government formally recognize Taiwan as an independent nation?

China has openly threatened an attack on Taiwan. Should the US, Japan, and other allies impose sanctions and other penalties on China until the Chinese government respects the independence of Taiwan?
