August 21, 2023: One hundred forty (140) years ago, on August, 21, 1883, an F5 tornado tore through southeastern Minnesota for three hours, causing 37 deaths, 200 injuries, and $700,000 in property damage ($22.8 million in modern U.S. dollars). At the time, Minnesota had only three hospitals, all in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul area, far from the areas affected by the tornado. This lack of proper facilities led the local Sisters of St. Francis to oversee the building of St. Mary’s Hospital, where the three presiding physicians were William Worrall Mayo and his two sons.[1]

This collaboration would eventually lead to the development of the Mayo Clinic, which today has locations in three states and two countries, where 4,500 doctors and scientists serve more than 1.3 million patients per year. The Clinic currently employs roughly 63,000 people in its college, health system, and laboratories, and puts more than $600 million into research every year. [2]
