August 21, 2024: Sixty-five years ago, Hawaii officially became the 50th state in the Union. The desire to add Hawaii and Alaska was increased after the conclusion of World War II because of their strategic importance. It took time to figure out the process of adding the two states due to the way they would affect electoral votes. Democrats had wanted Alaska, but Republicans wanted Hawaii. President Eisenhower had supported Hawaiian statehood, but he was not supportive of Alaska until 1958 when it was understood that there was a need to add both for the sake of balance in politics.[1]
