August 22, 2023: Seventy-seven percent (77%) of voters say that America was founded on the ideals of freedom, equality, and self-governance. A Scott Rasmussen National Survey found that large majorities of both Republicans (88%) and Democrats (71%) believe this is true.

The survey also found that 61% believe America is not doing a better job of living up to those ideals than it did in the past. This also includes majorities of both Republicans (69%) and Democrats (53%).

Methodology

The survey of 1,000 registered voters was conducted online by Scott Rasmussen on August 9-10, 2023. Field work for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. Certain quotas were applied, and the -sample was lightly weighted by geography, gender, age, race, education, internet usage, and political party to reasonably reflect the nation’s population of registered voters. Other variables were reviewed to ensure that the final sample is representative of that population.

The margin of sampling error for the full sample is +/- 3.1 percentage points.
