August 28, 2023: Sixty years ago, on August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous speech to an estimated 250,000 people gathered on the mall in Washington, DC. Speaking from the Lincoln Memorial, King shared a dream he saw “deeply rooted in the American dream.” He dreamt “that one day this nation will rise up, live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."[1]
The Baptist preacher added that when that day arrived, “all of God’s children will be able to sing with new meaning. ‘My country, ’tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim’s pride, from every mountain side, let freedom ring.’”[1]
The Rev. Dr. King delivered this speech with the cadence of a sermon, and a recording of it reached number 88 on the Billboard Hot 100.[2]
Along with the Declaration of Independence and the Gettysburg Address, King’s speech is considered one of the most eloquent descriptions of America’s founding ideals. Today, King is viewed favorably by 88% of Americans.[2]
Methodology
The survey of 1,000 registered voters was conducted online by Scott Rasmussen on January 10-12, 2023. Field work for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. Certain quotas were applied, and the -sample was lightly weighted by geography, gender, age, race, education, internet usage, and political party to reasonably reflect the nation’s population of registered voters. Other variables were reviewed to ensure that the final sample is representative of that population.
The margin of sampling error for the full sample is +/- 3.1 percentage points.
