August 4, 2023: Ballotpedia found 28 cases of elected officials expelled from state legislatures since 2000. In 20 cases, members of the chamber in which the lawmakers served voted to expel them, and eight were removed automatically following criminal convictions under state law.

Twenty-eight (28) elected officials have been expelled from state legislatures since 2000. Twenty (20) of these lawmakers were expelled through a vote carried out by members of their chamber. The remaining eight (8) were removed from office automatically due to criminal convictions.

Only six (6) of the twenty-eight lawmakers expelled since 2000 were minority party legislators, four (4) were Democrats serving in Republican chambers, and two (2) were Republicans serving in Democratic chambers. Only one (1) of these six expelled was expelled automatically due to criminal convictions.

Between 1813 and 2023, 79 expulsions have been made, including thirty-nine (39) Democrats, twenty-nine (29) Republicans, and seven (7) Socialists. All seven of the Socialists were expelled in the 1910s or 1920s.
