August 9, 2023: Seventy-eight years ago today, on August 9, 1945, an atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan. A similar bomb had been dropped on Hiroshima three days before. Six days later, Japan surrendered to the Allied forces, effectively ending World War II.[1]
The program to develop the weapon was codenamed “The Manhattan Project” and was led by J. Robert Oppenheimer. These remain the only incidents in which atomic bombs have been used in warfare.[1]
