August 9, 2024: Between 2016 and 2024, there was an average of 64 of the 100 largest cities by population in the United States had a Democratic mayor at the beginning of the year, ranging from 61 to 65. An average of 29 cities’ mayors were Republican with a range of 26-30.
As of 2024, 76% of the population of the top 100 cities lived in cities with Democratic mayors. 16% lived in a city with a Republican mayor, based on population estimates from 2020.
