December 1, 2023: On December 1, 1913, Buenos Aires, Argentina, became home to the world’s 13th ever subway transit system and the first such system in Latin America. The subway system, called Subte, initially spanned only 2.1 miles, with 78 train cars in total, two of which have been preserved and are on display today at Plaza de Mayo.[1][2]

Today, Subte serves more than 1.38 million riders daily across six rail lines, and offers service to 90 different stations along its 35.2 miles of routes.[2][1]

Each weekday, Scott Rasmussen’s Number of the Day explores interesting and newsworthy topics at the intersection of culture, politics, and technology.
