December 11, 2017: Eleven percent (11.1%) of adults in Washington, D.C., are heavy drinkers. That’s a higher share than any state in the nation. Vermont (9.1%), Wisconsin (8.9%), and Maine (8.6%) round out the top four slots.[1]
Our nation’s capital also leads the nation in binge drinking. More than one out of four D.C. residents (25.5%) have engaged in binge drinking over the past month.
West Virginia (3.5%) has the lowest share of heavy drinkers. Oklahoma (3.7%) is the only other state below the 4% level.
This data, compiled by Detox.net, is derived from a study by CDC’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). Heavy drinking is defined as more than two drinks daily for men and more than one drink daily for women.
