December 22, 2017: Among the 90% of Americans who celebrate Christmas, 55% view it as a religious holiday. That figure includes 46% who see it primarily as a religious celebration and 9% who see it as both a religious and cultural event.[1]

The figures are down slightly from 2013, when 58% celebrated Christmas in religious terms.

Today, 33% celebrate Christmas primarily as a secular or cultural holiday. That’s up a percentage point from four years ago.

The Pew Research Center also found a slight decline in belief of the biblical account of Jesus’ birth. Still, 66% believe he was born to a virgin, 75% believe he was laid in a manger, 68% believe wise men brought him gifts, and 67% believe angels announced his birth.
