December 22, 2023: On December 23, 1968, the crew of three astronauts approached orbit around the moon, in a trip that took a total of six days, three hours, and 42 seconds. These were the first people to ever travel to the moon. Once there, they orbited it for 20 hours, took 800 photos, and recorded 700 feet of movie film. Over the course of the 20 hours, the crew of Apollo 8 circled the moon 10 times.[1]

The crew began their orbit of the Moon on Christmas Eve of 1968, at which point they read the first 10 verses of the book of Genesis in a television broadcast that went out to about one billion people across 64 countries.[2]

Each weekday, Scott Rasmussen’s Number of the Day explores interesting and newsworthy topics at the intersection of culture, politics, and technology.
