December 5, 2017: Sixty-nine percent (69%) of children lived with two parents in 2016.
Twenty-three percent (23%) lived with a single mother, 4% lived with a single father, and 4% did not live with either parent.[1]
These figures, from the 2016 Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic Supplement, reflect dramatic changes over the past couple of generations.
In 1960, 88% of children lived with two parents. At that time, 8% lived with a single mom, 1% lived with a single father, and 3% did not live with either parent.
