December 5, 2019: The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that 13.2 million Americans experienced unemployment during 2018. That total is 1.3 million smaller than the year before. The median amount of time spent unemployed was 13.9 weeks.[1]
During that same year, 166.4 million Americans did have a job. That works out to 64% of all Americans 16 and older.[1]
The numbers include 11 million Americans who both had a job at some point during the year and were also unemployed at some point. A total of 2.2 million spent some time looking for work but never found a job.[1]
