December 7, 2020: In 2020, 82 U.S. Senate and U.S. House elections were decided by 10 percentage points or less. The rest, accounting for 83% of all such elections, were decided by double-digit margins.[1]
These totals included 8 Senate races and 74 House elections. Democrats won a total of 44 of these, while Republicans won 38.[1]
In terms of truly competitive races, only 39 were decided by five points or less. That represents 8% of the nation’s Senate and House races.[1]
